UMich Offers Year-Round Mental Health Services

The University of Michigan is launching a new program to provide mental health and substance use services to its students. The program will cover costs not covered by Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, or Aetna PPO plans, including co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses. The services will be available year-round, including during winter and summer breaks, unlike the previous program which was only available during the academic year.

Lonely Seniors Overlooked by Healthcare System

According to a recent University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging, about 33% of adults aged 50-80 reported feeling lonely some or often in 2024, similar to rates seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this baseline was not good, and certain groups were disproportionately affected, including those with major physical or mental health problems. For example, people with fair or poor mental health (75%), fair or poor physical health (53%), and the unemployed and disabled (52%) reported high rates of loneliness. Similarly, 29% of older adults said they felt isolated some or much of the time in 2024. Researchers recommend that clinicians screen patients for these issues and connect them with community resources to address social isolation and loneliness.
